Microrealism tattoo after Caravaggio's Taking of Christ by Fabio Pillon, The White Whale Tattoo Society, Milano

Fabio is a Resident Artist at The White Whale Tattoo Society in Milano. He works in Microrealism and Black and Grey Realism, and most of his work is portraiture, rendered at small scale with close attention to faces and expression.

He came to tattooing through drawing and portraiture, and the work still carries that order. His pieces read like drawings carried onto skin: strong contrast held together by soft shading, and the texture of a face treated with the same care as its features.

His subjects move between registers. Portraits and film stills sit next to Caravaggio, architecture, and botanical studies. What links them is tone. Much of his work has a quiet, slightly melancholic quality, closer to a photograph remembered than to a photograph copied.

Caravaggio is a useful key to the work. The painter built his images out of darkness, letting a few surfaces catch the light and leaving the rest in shadow. Black and Grey Realism works on the same principle, and Fabio's pieces after Caravaggio make the connection explicit: the composition is decided by where the light falls, not by how much detail fits.

He keeps testing technique, bringing the precision of traditional drawing into each piece. Microrealism leaves very little margin, and the discipline of drawing is what lets a face hold at a few centimetres across.
