Alba Buscemi

Alba is a Resident Artist at The White Whale Tattoo Society in Milano. She works in Fine Line and Botanical, and her pieces are small, precise, and built around a clear internal balance.

She arrived at tattooing from several directions at once. She studied Literature and Philosophy, then Nursing Sciences, then spent years working in fashion. Each of those left something behind. Fashion trained her eye for proportion and detail. The medical study gave her a practical understanding of skin: how a body heals, and what that means for a design that has to live on it. The years spent reading gave her the habit of treating a subject as something to interpret rather than copy.

Tattooing is where those things meet, and it is part of why the work reads the way it does.

Her references come from two places. Milano, where she lives and works, gives her the contemporary side: restrained, structural, more interested in line than in ornament. Sicily, where she is from, gives her the plants. The botanical elements in her work are observed rather than stylized.

Botanical tattooing is easy to do badly. A flower can end up as decoration, something placed on the body because it fills the space. Alba works the other way around. The composition comes first, then the placement, then the amount of detail a piece can carry at that size without closing up as it heals and settles. A Fine Line botanical is still readable years later only if restraint went into it from the start.

Most of her work starts from something specific the client brings, usually a person or a place. The design work is turning that into an image that holds on its own, without needing the story to explain it.
